FREE REIGN Is The Heaviest Band In Metal - Literally

April 17, 2009

Todd Archer of The Dallas Morning News reports: The lead singer is 6-8 with a shaved head and tattoos. The bass player is 6-6 and weighs 353 pounds. The drummer's head is shaved, too, and he also weighs more than 300 pounds.

"We have the heaviest band in the world — literally," said Justin Chapman, the lead guitarist. "You try to make the music fit your image, and to me, I see big guys on stage, big, scary guys, and I want to hear heavy, scary music."

Meet FREE REIGN.

Cowboys right tackle Marc Colombo is the lead singer and guitarist. Right guard Leonard Davis plays bass. Backup guard Cory Procter is on drums. Chapman, who played on the offensive line next to Davis at Wortham High School, is the newcomer.

This form of FREE REIGN, with a sound it calls "heavier than metal" on its MySpace page, [made] its debut [on April 3] at the Granada Theater with a six-song set.

"I'll listen to anything," Davis said. "A little bit of rock, country. I'll listen to metal, pop, alternative. If you look at my iPod, there's a variety in there."

Colombo and Procter are the original members of FREE REIGN. Last year, they set up inside the team's locker room for a mini-set that prompted Davis to learn the bass his wife bought him a few years ago. Chapman came in after hearing them play over the winter.

"He's the professional musician," Colombo said of Chapman.
